Juneteenth
Today recognizes the emancipation of slaves in Texas. While the Emancipation Proclamation was effective as of January 1, 1863, Texas resisted. On June 19, 1865, the Union General delivered an order to the people of Texas that all slaves were to be freed and treated equally. Juneteenth is a day to celebrate abolition and African American heritage.
